Manufactured Landscapes

Edward Burtynsky, whose work is showcased in this beautiful yet horrifying documentary that I watched a few years ago, presents viewers with a stark view of the industrial world by photographing or filming aesthetically pleasing shots of shocking environmental degredation. This creates a confusing, highly emotional tension between ethical disgust and visual pleasure, and the viewer leaves with a new appreciation for the destruction that may be caused by consumerism.
